The journey of the vines from the motherland Greece to the colonies in Italy coincides with an endless love story between wine and Taranto, which in modern times also gave rise to the Tarantino PGI. The Ionian Sea is the common thread with the foundation of the city in the eighth century by the Spartans. Taranto became the capital of Magna Graecia, which extended as far as eastern Sicily. Wine was one of the most flourishing trades in antiquity and even today, because Taranto is the land of the Primitivo di Manduria and the prized Valle d’Itria white wines. The Ionic arch of the Taranto gravine, ravines, with its deep canyons, characterizes both the western side bordering Basilicata and the western side reaching as far as Lecce. Frescoed caves and monks, who also contributed to the growth of wine culture, bring us up to the present day with very modern wineries and wine tourism destinations.

The Tarantino PGI states that the indication on the label of the variety requires the use of at least 85% of the grapes belonging to the variety indicated.

The typologies envisaged by the production regulations are:

  • Tarantino PGI White, also Sparkling, Overripe Grapes, Raisin wine
  • Tarantino PGI Red, also Sparkling , Overripe Grapes, Raisin wine, Nouveau
