Daunia PGI since 1995

The modern province of Foggia and its PGI wines are identified by the name Daunia, which is that of its pre-Roman population.

Wine colour: white, red, rosé

Alcohol content: from 9.50% to 15% depending on typology

Characteristic of: the entire province of Foggia, partly the province of BAT limited to the territories of the municipalities of Margherita di Savoia, San Ferdinando di Puglia, Trinitapoli.

Grape Varietie : about 50 varieties, both native and international.

The Daunian civilization was one of the most flourishing in the pre-Roman period. The Dauni, together with the Peuceti and Messapi, were part of Iapigia. It is interesting to note how, over the centuries, this area of Apulia, which coincides with the current province of Foggia, has tenaciously preserved its identity, of which agriculture is an integral part. It borders on Molise, Campania and Basilicata, with which it shares ancient rituals such as the transhumance of the cattle herds. The art of making wine, testified in manuscripts and ancient ceramics, and that of wheat and bread reigns supreme.

The Daunia PGI implies that the indication on the label of the grape variety requires the use of at least 85% of the grapes of the variety indicated.

The typology provided for in the production regulations are:

  • Daunia PGI White, also Sparkling, Spumante Charmat Method, Overripe Grapes, Raisin wine
  • Daunia PGI Red, also Sparkling, Overripe Grapes, Raisin wine, Nouveau
  • Daunia PGI Rosé, Sparkling, Spumante Charmat Method, Nouveau.
