The history of the city and its PDO wine is linked to the famous Disfida di Barletta (1503) between Italian and French knights.

According to popular tales, the famous “Disfida di Barletta” the Challenge f Barletta, of February 13th 1503 was triggered by a few too many glasses of the good local red wine. The clash between 13 Italian and 13 French knights has become a legend and the “Cantina della Disfida” is a reference point for tourists in the medieval town centre.

There are five typologies provided for in the production regulations:
Barletta PDO White requires a minimum of 60% Malvasia Bianca In the glass it has a more or less intense straw yellow colour, a delicate, fruity and distinctive aroma and a dry, well balanced taste

Barletta PDO Sparkling White has a fine, evanescent froth, a more or less intense straw yellow colour, a delicate, fruity, distinctive aroma and a dry, well balanced taste.

Barletta PDO Red is the expression of a minimum of 70% Nero di Troia grapes. It has a ruby red colour tending towards garnet with possible orange reflections with ageing, a vinous and characteristic aroma, a dry, harmonious and full-bodied flavour.
Barletta PDO Reserve Red wine must age for at least two years, of which at least one year in wooden barrels.

Barletta PDO Nouveau has a more or less intense ruby red colour, an intense, pleasing and distinctive aroma and a harmonious, distinctive, rounded flavour.
Alcohol Content: 11,50%.
Barletta PDO Rosé is made with a minimum of 70% of Grapes of Troia. The wine has a more or less intense rosé color, a delicately vinous, characteristic and sometimes fruity aroma, and a dry, well balanced, pleasant taste.

In the glass, Barletta PDO Sparkling Rosé has a fine, evanescent froth, a more or less intense rosé color, a delicately winy aroma, characteristic and sometimes fruity, and a dry, well balanced, pleasant taste.

Barletta PDO Malvasia Bianca produced from a minimum of 90% of White Malvasia grapes. The wine has a more or less intense straw yellow color, a delicate aroma, with a characteristic fruity scent, a dry and well balanced taste.

Barletta PDO Malvasia Bianca Sparkling has a fine, evanescent froth, a more or less intense straw yellow colour, a delicate aroma with a distinctive, fruity flavour and a dry, well balanced taste.

Barletta PDO Nero di Troia requires a minimum of 90% of Nero di Troia grapes. The wine has a ruby red colour tending towards garnet with possible orange reflections with ageing, a characteristic vinous aroma, a dry and well balanced full-bodied taste
Alcohol content: 12% Nero di Troia
Barletta PDO Nero di Troia Reserve wine must age for a minimum of two years, at least one year of which in wooden barrels.
